Local Attorney Elected to National College of Labor and Employment Lawyers

On June 10, 2010, the National College of Labor and Employment Lawyers announced the election of Attorney Samuel J. Cordes, who practices in downtown Pittsburgh.

Election as a Fellow is the highest recognition that can be bestowed on a labor and employment lawyer, and recognizes sustained outstanding performance in the profession, as well as exemplary integrity, dedication and excellence. Only one attorney from each state receives this honor each year. Election follows an intense investigation involving interviews with trial and appellate judges as well as other lawyers who the attorney has practiced with and before throughout his or her career. A Fellow must have practiced Labor and Employment law for at least 20 years.

Mr. Cordes was installed as a Fellow on November 6, 2010 in Chicago during the American Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section's Continuing Legal Education Conference.

Mr. Cordes has been recognized as the premier employment lawyer representing individual employees in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Tribune Review calls Cordes "the Archangel of Employment Rights." The Pittsburgh Post Gazette notes he is "extremely smart in the scholarly sense and has the practical street-smart sense. You don't see that combination in too many lawyers."

Mr. Cordes is the owner of Samuel J. Cordes & Associates of Pittsburgh. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he was an editor of the Journal of Law and Commerce, and won awards for brief writing, labor law, employment law and corporate law. He also holds a Masters Degree in journalism from Point Park University.

He often lectures on employment law topics for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, as well as other local and national organizations. He also writes extensively on employment law and legal ethics topics. He has authored and co-authored more than 20 articles on employment law topics for local and national publications. He is rated AV by Martindale-Hubble, that publication's highest ranking, and is also listed in the 2004-2010 editions of The Best Lawyers in America; the 2004-2010 editions of Pennsylvania Super Lawyers, and the Top 50 Super Lawyers in Pittsburgh in 2010, 2007 and 2005. He is the only Employment and Labor attorney in Allegheny County who is rated a perfect 10-Superb by AVVO, the national Washington-based attorney rating service.

Mr. Cordes is co-Chair of the National Employment Lawyers' Association (NELA) Trial Practice Committee; Chair of the Amicus Curiae Committee of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers' Association, and an elected member of the Judiciary Committee of Allegheny County Bar Association. He is a member of the Allegheny County Academy of Trial Lawyers.
